Taking inspiration from my beloved work, "The Phantom of the Opera", I created costumes and a stage set designed to recreate a cinematic scene.
I poured my own unique touches into the design—the burn scars hidden beneath the mask, the confrontation with guns drawn.

This is one of the three key prints in this series. The original title is “Sanka Hakuu” (white rain).
“Hakuu” is rain that falls even though it is sunny. Beneath Mt. Fuji suddenly darkens with a sudden shower of rain and lightning.
Despite the title, rain is not depicted here.
Exquisite expression of contrast between brightness on the upper part and darkness on the lower part of the mountain.
This print is also known as “Black Fuji” and is drawn in contract to South Wind, Clear Sky known as “Red Fuji”.
By the way, from where did Hokusai see Mt. Fuji?

冨嶽の中で三役と呼ばれる絵の一枚です。
富士山の大きさを表現したともいわれています。
「白雨」というのは晴れているのに降る雨のことです。
富士山の下は突然の雨が降って真っ暗くなり、稲光が走っています。
「白雨」と題しながら雨は全く描いていません。稲光も下から上に上がってくるかのように描いています。
赤富士に対するように描いた黒富士ですが、富士山の上の明るさに対して下の暗さを描き分けた、明と暗の表現が絶妙ですね。
北斎はどの視点でこの富士を見ていたのでしょうか ?
