チャールズ・ディケンズといえば『クリスマス・キャロル』が定番ですが、実は翌年から「クリスマス・ブックス」シリーズを続けていました。その第二作が The Chimes 『鐘の音』🔔
舞台は大晦日から新年。
貧しい労働者トロッティが鐘の精霊に導かれ、「貧困は生まれつきではなく、社会制度が生み出すもの」という社会批判的テーマに触れています。
当時の読者には『クリスマス・キャロル』ほど祝祭的ではないため、あまり人気にならなかったそうです。
