光を透かすヒカゲヘゴの葉が、森の中でやわらかな影をつくっていました。
ヤシの木みたいに幹が立ち上がる、倭国最大級のシダ植物。
1枚の葉が2〜3mも広がるなんて、ちょっと不思議な存在です。

“生きた化石”ともいわれていて、幹に見えるのは木ではなく気根の柱。
新芽はゼンマイみたいにくるっと丸まっています。

そして…ヒカゲヘゴ全体の写真を撮るの、すっかり忘れてました（笑）
また次回、ちゃんと全身を撮ってご紹介しますね。

Soft sunlight filtered through the fronds of the Hikage Hego,
casting gentle shadows across the forest floor.
It’s one of the largest fern species in Japan, with a trunk that rises like a palm tree—
and each frond can spread 2–3 meters wide. Such a fascinating presence.

It’s often called a “living fossil,” and what looks like its trunk is actually a column of aerial roots.
Its young shoots curl up like fiddleheads, just like a coiled spring.

And… I totally forgot to take a photo of the whole tree (oops!).
I’ll make sure to capture its full height next time and share it with you.
