Calling Beijing’s wolf warrior diplomacy cowardly, deceptive, overbearing and shortsighted is not just emotion. It fits the record.
Cowardly, because the harshest threatsや報復 measures tend to hit middle powers and democracies that raise legitimate concerns, rather than real engagement with equal rivals. Much of the show is for a domestic audience.
Deceptive, because disinformation and narrative warfare repeatedly try to reframe economic coercion or military pressure as normal cooperation, even when tariffs and boycotts clearly follow political disagreements.
Overbearing, because diplomats have used trade leverage and personal insults against foreign leaders and parliaments, choosing coercion over persuasion.
Shortsighted, because the net effect has been to push Europe and Indo Pacific states toward de risking from China, harden public opinion and weaken Beijing’s own strategic environment. A self inflicted wound.
Recent debate has highlighted a diary entry attributed to Qing envoy Guo Songtao around 1861 that used exactly these four words about late Qing diplomacy. If that source is accurate, the same four flaws were seen from within more than 160 years ago, just decades before the dynasty collapsed. The historical echo is hard to ignore.
