I am deeply saddened by the loss of many precious lives caused by the cyclone that hit Sri Lanka. I express my deep condolences to the victims and the bereaved families.
Based on a humanitarian perspective and in view of our friendly relations with Sri Lanka, Japan has decided to dispatch an assessment team and provide emergency relief goods to support those who are affected by the cyclone through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
I offer my sincere prayers for the earliest possible recovery of the injured and the reconstruction of disaster-stricken areas.

The photo exhibition "Werner Bischof's Showa: When Japan Was Not Japan" opens at Leica Gallery Omotesando on December 5th, running through March 3rd, 2026.The exhibition showcases works captured by Swiss photographer Werner Bischof during the GHQ occupation period between 1951 and 1952.
As a Magnum Photos member, Bischof spent approximately 10 months in Japan, documenting the country's post-war reconstruction era.His photographs meticulously recorded both aspects of the era: traditional culture including shrines, temples, tea ceremony, and Bunraku, alongside the daily lives of people influenced by American culture.
This body of work serves as a precious record of a unique period in Japanese history.During his stay, Bischof developed a deep friendship with photographer Ihei Kimura, exchanging their philosophies on photography.
As we mark 80 years since the war's end, these images quietly observe Japan's process of reclaiming its identity.
