正直に書きます。

ディスレクシアを知る一昨日までは、
一番そばにいた私でさえ
「なんで覚えられないんだろう」「なんで写せないんだろう」
そう思ってしまっていました。

「もう一回書いてみよう」
泣き出す長女に
「泣かないで、ちゃんと見て書いてごらん」と、
そんな言葉を、疑いもせず口にしていました。

でも今ならわかります。

努力が足りなかったんじゃない。
世界が、違っていただけだったのだと。

親なのに、
いちばん理解してあげられなかった。

それが、いま一番つらいです。

To be honest…

Before I learned about dyslexia just the other day,
even I, who was closest to her, would think:
“Why can’t she remember?”
“Why can’t she copy it correctly?”

When my daughter started crying, I would say,
“Try writing it one more time.”
“Don’t cry, just look carefully and write.”

I said those words without hesitation.

But now I understand.

It wasn’t that she wasn’t trying hard enough.
She was living and learning in a different world.

As a parent,
not being able to understand her sooner
is the most painful thing for me now.
