2回目の来日時(1987年)に見た歌舞伎「暫」を題材にした作品の前に立つビュフェ。
描かれているのは、三升紋の成田屋。襲名したばかりの第12代市川團十郎でしょうか。
現在この作品は、大阪松竹座のロビー正面に展示されています✨

Buffet stands before a work inspired by the kabuki play “Shibaraku,” which he saw during his second visit to Japan (1987).
Depicted is the Naritaya family with its three-shō crest. Could this be the 12th generation Ichikawa Danjūrō, who had just taken the name?
This work is currently displayed in the lobby of the Osaka Shochikuza theater.✨

引っ越し魔だったビュフェの終の棲家となったのが、プロヴァンス地方トゥルトゥールで購入したラ・ボームです🏡
20代のころにビュフェが描いた室内画は大変質素でしたが、約40年後には、ビュフェとアナベルが2人で収集した骨董品が並ぶ、なんとも豪華な室内となりました✨

La Baume, purchased in Tourteille, Provence, became the final home of Buffet, who was known for moving frequently.
The interior paintings Buffet created in his twenties were very simple, but about 40 years later, the room became truly luxurious, filled with antiques collected by Buffet and Annabel.

Here’s a clear way to explain the difference between the Japanese particles で (de) and を (o) in English.

1) で (de): location of an action / means / cause / scope

Core idea: “at / in / on” (where an action happens) or “by / with” (how it’s done).

A) Place where an action happens (location of activity)

図書館で勉強します。
I study at the library.

倭国で働いています。
I work in Japan.

B) Means / tool / method (“by / with / using”)

電車で行きます。
I go by train.

倭国語で話してください。
Please speak in Japanese.

C) Cause / reason (“because of”)

雨で試合が中止になった。
The game was cancelled because of rain.

D) Scope / limit (“in / among / for”)

３人で行きます。
We go as a group of three.

このクラスで一番上手。
The best in this class.

2) を (o): direct object / starting point (leaving) / route (moving through)

Core idea: marks what the verb directly acts on, and with movement verbs it can mark the place you leave or pass through.

A) Direct object (what you do the action to)

パンを食べます。
I eat bread.

倭国語を勉強します。
I study Japanese.

B) Starting point of movement (leave / depart from)

家を出ます。
I leave home.

会社を辞めます。
I quit the company. (literally “leave the company”)

C) Route / area you move through

公園を散歩します。
I walk around/through the park.

橋を渡ります。
I cross the bridge.

The easiest contrast

図書館で勉強する = study at the library (location of action)

図書館を勉強する ❌ (doesn’t work, because the library isn’t the object you study)

公園で散歩する = take a walk in the park (park = setting)

Today, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper featured my journey in the column “This Person,” covering my work in Japan, the U.S., and around the world.
I want to prove that it’s never too late—and also pass on to the next generation that it’s never too early.

学生時代の挫折、ダンスとの出会い、サラリーマンを経て渡米。
ニューヨークでゼロからの挑戦、そして学校での活動、そして今世界へ。
これまでの道のりを簡潔に分かりやすくまとめて頂きました。

やりたいことを何度も自分で諦めてしまったから、好きなことを追う事ができる人生が何よりも尊いと思ってます。

「ダンスで世界平和」なんて夢物語かもしれないけど、
少なくとも僕はダンスと出会って、やりたいことができて、夢ができた。

世界のどこかで出会う目の前の人くらいは、少しだけ笑顔にできているかも。
だからきっと、平和っていうのも、こういう小さな幸せの積み重ねで叶っていくものなのかもしれない。

もうすぐ昭和100年が終わります。

僕は昭和に生まれた人間で、
体を使う仕事なので、身体の変化も如実に感じ、今もこのNYで、移民として毎日生きるだけで精一杯。
だけど、
それでも「遅すぎることはない」ということを体現していきたい。もう後悔はしたくない。

同時に、
「早すぎることもない」という事も次世代に伝えていきたい。
かつての自分は諦めてしまったから。

これからも、
知らない世界を見せ続けていきたいと思います。
