The slow, orderly retreat was turned into a wild rout! A brigade outside the city which had been hammered throughout the day, turned from its position and dashed inside the gates. Military police opened fire on the first rout, killing six of its leaders. But the flames of dis- sension spread throughout the city. Soon Nanking's main thoroughfares were filled with Chinese soldiers from outside the walls. At first they walked. Then they began to run at a mad pace. As they sprinted the panic-stricken men shed their rifles and their uniforms. The wounded who were able to move wandered helplessly through the streets, only to be trampled down or shoved aside. Many were shot by their comrades in the wild stampede to the river gate on the west ... the only means of escape.
