僕はバンコクのファランポーン駅から、北へ向かう最後の列車に乗った。
鉄の匂いと汗のにおいが混ざる車内は、出発の前からすでに過去の記憶みたいに曇っていた。
この線路が半年後には消えると誰もが知っていたが、誰ひとり声には出さなかった。
薄暗い通路を抜けて見える車両は、延々と続く鏡のトンネルのようで、座席のひとつひとつに沈黙が積もっていた。
天井の扇風機は気まぐれに回り、埃を撒き散らしながら、乗客たちの顔に影を落としていた。
列車はただ北へ向かう。
それは旅というよりも、葬列のように感じられた。
過去を棄てたい人間、未来を見たい人間、ただ眠りたいだけの人間。
すべてが同じ振動のなかで揺れていた。
僕は窓に額を押しつけ、夜の街灯を数えながら思った。
これは逃避ではない。観光でも冒険でもない。
もっと単純で、もっとどうしようもない、ただ「ここにいなければならない」という衝動の延長線にすぎなかった。
チェンマイに着けば何が変わるわけでもない。
それでも、この列車に揺られている時間だけは、確かに生きていると感じられた。
終わりゆく鉄路で、始まる旅があった。

Ceiling fans turned lazily, scattering dust and dropping shadows across the faces of passengers.

all swayed together in the same vibration.
I pressed my forehead against the window, counting streetlights in the night.
This wasn’t escape.
Not tourism, not adventure.

Nothing would change when I reached Chiang Mai.
