Their voices slowly warm and loosen
the hardened places deep in my chest

The scent of coffee
quietly spreads through the chilled room
The rising steam gently wraps
last night’s heavy feelings
and carries them away into the sky

Today, once again
I softly draw my still-hurt self close
and take one step, then another
toward the light
