🥚鳥の卵、驚きの生存戦略!
殻の「ザラザラ」に隠された秘密とは⁉️

みなさんは、鳥の卵と聞いてどんな手触りを想像しますか？
スーパーで売っている鶏の卵のように、つるつるとした感触を思い浮かべる人が多いかもしれません。
でも実は、野生の鳥たちの卵の表面には、目には見えないレベルの多様な「デコボコ」が存在しています。
これまで、卵の形や色についての研究はたくさんありました。
しかし、「卵の殻の表面構造（テクスチャ）」が、なぜ種によって違うのか？
その理由は、長い間謎に包まれていました。
卵の殻は、ただの中身を守る容器ではありません。
殻には小さな穴が開いていて、呼吸をしたり、水分の蒸発を防いだりしています。
さらに、親鳥が抱卵するときや、巣の中で転がるときの摩擦にも耐えなければなりません。
もし、この「表面のザラザラ」に、鳥たちが生き残るための秘密が隠されているとしたら？
今回紹介する論文は、そんな卵の表面構造の謎に、最新技術で迫った研究です。
研究チームは、なんと453種類もの鳥の卵、約1400個を分析しました 。
単に触って確かめたわけではありません。
「optical profilometry」という、非常に精密な3Dスキャン技術を使っています 。
これにより、髪の毛の太さよりもはるかに細かいレベルで、卵表面の地形図を描き出したのです。
研究者たちが注目したのは、主に3つの指標です。
1つ目は「粗さ（Roughness）」。表面がどれくらい荒れているか。
2つ目は「歪度（Skewness）」。デコボコが「山」として飛び出しているか、「谷」として凹んでいるか。
3つ目は「尖度（Kurtosis）」。そのデコボコがどれくらい鋭く尖っているか。
これらのデータを、鳥の生活スタイルや巣の環境と照らし合わせた結果、面白いことが分かってきました。
まず、「模様のある卵」は「模様のない卵」よりも表面がザラザラしている傾向がありました。
さらに、巣のタイプも重要でした。
地面のくぼみやお皿のような「オープンな巣」で産まれる卵は、ザラザラしています。
逆に、地面の凹みなどの「半分囲われた巣」で産まれる卵は、つるつるしている傾向がありました 。
囲われた巣は湿度が高くなりがちで、細菌が繁殖しやすい環境です。
つるつるした表面は、細菌が付着しにくく、清潔に保つのに有利なのかもしれません 。
次に「歪度（山か谷か）」についての発見です。
驚くべきことに、調査した種の約90％の卵で、表面は「山」ではなく「谷（凹み）」が支配的でした 。
これは、エンジニアリングの世界では「摩擦による摩耗粉を閉じ込めたりするのに有利な構造」として知られています 。
親鳥が卵を温める際、卵は常に擦れます。
「谷」の多い構造は、その摩擦ダメージを減らすために進化した可能性があります 。
一方で、水辺に巣を作ったり、濡れた羽で卵を温める習性のある鳥は、逆に「山」が多い（飛び出した部分が多い）傾向がありました 。
最後に「尖度（尖り具合）」です。
意外なことに、植物を主食とする鳥（草食性）は、肉食性の鳥に比べて、卵表面の突起が鋭く尖っていました。
なぜ食べ物が卵のトゲトゲに関係するのか？
これはまだ完全には解明されていません。今後の検証に期待したいところです。
この研究で一番重要なポイントは、「親戚関係（系統）」よりも「ライフスタイル（生態）」の方が、卵の手触りに強く影響しているということです 。
つまり、鳥たちは先祖代々受け継いだ形質をただ守っているわけではありません。
それぞれの住む環境、巣の形、そして生活習慣に合わせて、卵の殻というミクロな世界も適応してきたのでしょう。
